Prologue

Amelia's ears rang with the force of her own scream. It overpowered the sounds of the world around her, the clash of steel, the screams of angry men, of dying men and the screams of women too. Her sisters. It was a raw, harsh, powerful sound which seemed to linger in the air. It tore from her throat like a wild, enraged beast eager to strike at the object of her anger and fear. It was a scream born of desperation and terror. When she finally managed to snap her mouth shut, she felt dazed, unable to focus, unable to concentrate and mind numbingly nauseated. She almost gagged from the cloying taste of decay on her tongue.

The vice-like, iron grip upon her arms abruptly fell away as the terrible desire and hunger that had fueled their movements faded from eyes that filmed over in death. Eyes that had been so vile, framed by a face she knew would haunt her with nightmares. As he went limp, she pushed him roughly away from her body. Even that small action seemed to take all her strength and her head spun in dizzying circles. She was so tired... So tired...
